Hazard identified
Health Canada's sampling and evaluation program has determined that these products do not meet the requirements for expansion gates under Canadian law. The accessible surface coating and applied coating components contain barium in excess of the allowable limit.
Some forms of barium are safely used in medical and commercial applications, while other forms of barium can be toxic, causing adverse health effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and cramps as well as more severe symptoms. Expansion gates coated with paint containing barium in excess of the allowable limit are strictly prohibited in Canada.
As of January 27, 2020, the company has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada.
Number sold
Approximately 1,482 units of the recalled gates were sold in Canada exclusively online at Toys"R"Us Canada, Walmart Canada, Home Depot, Groupon, Best Buy, Hudson Bay, Lowe’s/Rona, Staples Canada, Baby Liquidators, and TJ's The Kiddies Store.
Time period sold
These recalled gates were sold from January 2017 to January 2020.
