Hazard identified
Health Canada advised Canadians on October 9, 2019 of serious fire and burn risks that are associated with the use of portable products that use certain containers of pourable alcohol-based fuels that are not equipped with a flame arrestor.
A fire or burn hazard, called flame jetting, occurs when fuel vapours around a poured fuel stream ignite when a user refuels a portable fire product that is still burning or hot, and a flame is not readily visible. This can result in a burst of flaming fuel being rapidly expelled out of the container and travelling a distance dangerous to the user and bystanders. Flame jetting occurs very quickly, so the user and/or bystanders are unable to react quickly enough to move away from an incoming flame jet.
There have been numerous reported incidents of serious injuries, including fatalities in Canada from flame jetting events. Please visit this page for more information on flame jetting and portable products that use pourable alcohol-based fuels.
The affected product is a container of pourable alcohol-based fuel that is not equipped with a flame arrestor. As a result, it could contribute to a flame jetting incident.
As of March 10, 2021, Swissmar Ltd. has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada.
