Product description
This recall involves hair barrettes labelled "hair ornaments" with various charms.
Hazard identified
Health Canada's sampling and evaluation program has revealed that the charms on the recalled piece of jewellery contain lead in excess of the allowable limit.
Under the Children's Jewellery Regulations of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, it is illegal to import, advertise or sell jewellery items that appeal primarily to children under 15 years of age and contain more than 600 mg/kg total lead.
Lead is very toxic to children, even at low exposure levels. Children can ingest lead when they chew, suck, or swallow jewellery items containing lead which can cause damage to their bodies. Potential health effects associated with exposure to high levels of lead include vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, coma or even death.
In laboratory testing, the metal charms on the clips were found to be composed of 74% total lead which is far in excess of the legal limits.
Neither Health Canada nor Donovan Distributors Ltd. has received any reports of incidents or illnesses related to the use of this product.

Number sold
Details on the number of units distributed, the retail locations and time period in which these products were sold across Canada are not available because the importer of this jewellery item is no longer in business. Health Canada has only been able to ascertain recall information from the Atlantic distributor, Donovan Distributors Ltd., where the sample was obtained.
120 units of the recalled barrettes have been sold in Atlantic Canada. Please note that this product may have been sold elsewhere across Canada by other distributors.

The recalled products were sold in Atlantic Canada in May 2010.
