Generation 2 Worldwide and ChildESIGNS Drop-Side Cribs
Product description
In Canada, this recall involves only the model numbers 592081, 592681 and 597431 for drop-side cribs made by Generation 2 Worldwide. The name Generation 2 Worldwide appears on a label attached to the cribs' headboard or footboard. Some of the recalled cribs may also have the name ChildESIGNS on the teething rail.
Hazard identified
The cribs' plastic hardware can break or deform, causing the drop-side to detach. The cribs' mattress support can also detach from the crib frame. When the drop-side or mattress support detaches, it creates a space between the side of the crib and the mattress. Infants and toddlers can roll into this space and become entrapped, which can lead to suffocation or strangulation, or they can fall out of the crib.
On February 9, 2010, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of Generation 2 Worldwide and ChildESIGNS drop side cribs. In the United States, the responsible company, Generation 2, is no longer in business.
Previously, Health Canada had not received information indicating that these cribs had been sold in Canada. However, Elfe Juvenile Products has recently informed Health Canada that they had distributed the recalled cribs in Canada during the time period indicated at the bottom of this notice.
In Canada, neither Health Canada nor Elfe Juvenile Products has received reports of injuries or incidents related to the use of these products. In the United States, there have been 3 reports of entrapments that led to infant suffocations and 20 other reports associated with drop side detachments, including 2 reports of entrapments and 5 reports of children falling out of the cribs. There have also been 8 reports of mattress support detachments.
Parents and caregivers are reminded to check their baby's crib regularly before using it and are instructed not to use it if any parts are loose or missing, of if there are any signs of damage. Do not repair broken parts with tape, wire, or rope.
