Cybex Smith Press model 5340 and 5341
Product description
The products involved are the Cybex Smith Press models 5340 and 5341. Model 5340 was manufactured and sold from 1989 to 1993, and model 5341 was manufactured and sold from 1993 to 2009. The model number is printed on the base of the frame of the Smith Press equipment.
Both models are comprised of a weight bar contained between two parallel vertical tracks. The individual exercising can move the weight bar up and down within the tracks to perform a wide variety of squat and other exercises. When the user is finished with his or her exercise, the weight bar is secured or racked by placing the hooks, located on both ends of the weight bar, over a set of pins contained within the vertical tracks.
Hazard identified
A fall hazard has been identified when a user has not fully engaged the weight bar hooks over the pins and has not set the safety stops, permitting the bar to fall near a user. Potential injuries range from minor to significant including paralysis, spinal fracture and injuries to the head and neck.
As of September 17, 2018, the company has received one report of a weight bar falling in Canada, and no report of an injury.
Number sold
Approximately 21 units of affected model 5340 and 123 units of affected model 5341 were sold in Canada.
Time period sold
Model 5340 was sold from 1989 through 1993 and model 5341 was sold from 1993 through 2009.

What you should do
Consumers should immediately stop using the weight-lifting equipment and contact Cybex for a repair kit for model 5341 to be installed by Cybex. A credit or refund will be available for model 5340.
