Black Diamond Equipment Recon LT Avalanche Transceiver recalled due to risk of a signal transmission failure during emergencies
Immediately stop using the recalled transceiver and follow the instructions on the Black Diamond website to update the firmware or receive a full refund.
This recall involves the Recon LT Avalanche Transceiver manufactured between May 2021 and March 2023 and having serial numbers with the first four digits between the range of 2119-2239. The serial number can be identified by connecting the beacon to the PIEPS app using Bluetooth. The devices are worn by skiers/snowboarders/snowmobilers to aid search and rescue should they or their partners become buried in an avalanche. The transceiver was sold as a standalone unit and as part of two avalanche safety sets.
The transceiver is plastic and measures 11 centimetres tall by 7 centimetres wide. It has a grey exterior, a blue top, and an LCD screen on the front. The Black Diamond Logo and model name are displayed on the front of the unit.

The recalled transceivers can unexpectedly enter ‘search’ mode despite the rotary switch being in its ‘send’ position, resulting in the transceiver failing to transmit a signal which can cause delayed search and rescue operations in the case of an avalanche.
As of April 11, 2023, the company has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada. In the United States, the company has received 7 reports of product malfunction and no reports of injuries.
