Product description

This recall involves certain 2010 models of the Black Diamond AvaLung-equipped packs. The recalled packs must have the exact combination of the model name, the colour (printed on the side of the pack) and the PO number (printed on a white label inside the pack) as shown in the table below.

Hazard identified

The intake tubing on the recalled AvaLung packs may crack in cold temperatures and may cause the product to fail. Black Diamond states that the air intake system on these packs extracts air from the snow, allowing the victim of an avalanche to breathe while buried under the snow.

There has been one report of the tubing cracking, with no reported injuries.

Health Canada has not received any reports of incidents or injuries related to the use of these products.

Number sold

Approximately 180 of the recalled AvaLung products were sold in Canada. In the United States, approximately 3500 of the recalled products have been sold.

Time period sold

The recalled products were sold from January to December 2010 in Canada, the United States, Europe and select countries throughout the rest of the world.

Place of origin

The product was assembled in China with parts from Philippines and the USA.

What you should do

Consumers who purchased an AvaLung pack in 2010 should immediately stop using it and check its model name, colour, and PO number. If the pack has been recalled, consumers are advised to contact Black Diamond for further instructions.
