Affected products

This recall involves carbon fiber base bars installed on MY22 Speed Concept SLR bicycles and Bontrager Aeolus RSL VR-C handlebars/stems installed on MY21 and MY22 Emonda SLR bicycles and sold separately in the aftermarket as a one-piece product under the same name.

Bontrager Aeolus RSL VR-C Handlebar/Stem Model years 2020, 2021 and 2022

Issue

The carbon bar may break during use, posing risk of fall hazard.

As of August 17, 2022, the company has received one report of incident in Canada relating to the Aeolus handlebar/stem, resulting in a concussion, stitches, and a dental injury. In the United States, the company has received five reports of incident relating to the Speed Concept, and 32 claims relating to the Aelous handlebar/stem. 

What you should do

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled products. Consumers should contact their local authorized Trek retailer to arrange for a free repair. If consumers have any questions, they can bring their bicycle to a retailer to determine if they have a recalled product.

Joint recall with Health Canada, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (US CPSC) and Trek Bicycle Canada ULC.

Please note that the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act prohibits recalled products from being redistributed, sold or even given away in Canada.

Number Sold

The company reported that 64 units of the Trek MY22 Speed Concept Bicycle, 471 units of the Trek MY21 and MY22 Emonda SLR Bicycle, and 115 units of the Bontrager Aeolus RSL VR-C Handlebar/Stem were sold in Canada. The company reported that 3200 units of the Trek MY22 Speed Concept Bicycle and the MY21 and MY22 Emonda SLR Bicycle, and 900 units of the Bontrager Aeolus RSL VR-C Handlebar/Stem were sold in the United States.

The affected products were sold from June 2020 to June 2022.

Trek MY22 Speed Concept SLR bicycles and MY21-MY22 Emonda SLR bicycles were manufactured in Taiwan, Germany, and the United States.
