Issue
On certain trucks, the connecting rod bushings could fail due to a manufacturing defect. This could cause an engine failure that can result in a sudden loss of power with an inability to restart. Note: This replaces recall 20504 (Transport Canada recall 2020-198). Trucks that previously had new connecting rods installed or that have the latest engine software update do not require this repair.
Safety risk
A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, a stalled vehicle could also increase the risk of crash.
Corrective actions
Navistar will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer install a detection system to warn a driver if there is a problem with the connecting rod bushing. The system will cause a red engine warning light to turn on if a problem is detected, before a connecting rod failure happens. Engines found with a suspect connecting rod will be repaired.
