Issue
Certain vehicles fail to conform to Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 102 – Transmission Control Functions. Specifically, the ignition interlock system was designed to allow the engine to start with the gear selector in any position, and to only engage the chosen gear once the service brake is applied and the gear selector is shifted into neutral position then moved from neutral into a forward or reverse drive position. This does not meet the requirements of the Standard which stipulates that the engine cannot be started if the transmission control is in a forward or reverse drive position. Correction: Dealers will install a neutral start harness that will prevent the engine from starting unless the transmission selector is in the neutral position.
