Product description
The November 2009 recall involved all single and double umbrella strollers by Maclaren. The word "Maclaren" is printed on the stroller. Maclaren strollers sold after May 2010 have a different hinge design and are not affected by this announcement.
The affected models include the Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, Techno XLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno, and Easy Traveller.
A "Kushies Baby" label may be applied to the bottom of the stroller.
Hazard identified
If the stroller is not fully opened or closed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, the hinge mechanism can pose a risk of fingertip amputation and laceration to the child. When used according the manufacturer's instructions, the strollers are safe and comply with Canadian stroller regulations.
There have not been any additional incidents in Canada since the 2009 recall and only one reported incident of a Canadian child receiving a laceration from the folding mechanism of a Maclaren stroller.
American Baby Products, Inc. (formerly Maclaren USA) has received an additional 37 reported injuries in the United States since the 2009 recall. A total of 149 reported incidents with the strollers, including five additional fingertip amputations, 16 additional lacerations and 16 additional fingertip entrapments/bruising incidents. At the time of the original recall, there were 15 incidents, including 12 reports of fingertip amputations in the United States.
Number sold
In Canada, approximately 22 000 of the recalled strollers were sold at The Bay, Toys R Us (Babies R Us), and other retailers.
An unknown number were also sold at Gap Canada Stores.
Time period sold
The recalled products were sold from 2004 to November 2009.
Place of origin
Manufactured in China.
