Hazard identified
Health Canada's sampling and testing program revealed that the surface coating on the barrettes contains lead in excess of allowable limits.
Under the Children's Jewellery Regulations and the Surface Coating Materials Regulations of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, it is illegal to import, advertise or sell jewellery items that appeal primarily to children under 15 years of age that contain more than 600 mg/kg total lead and 90mg/kg migratable lead or the surface coating material containing more than 90mg/kg of lead.
Lead is very toxic to children, even at low exposure levels. Children can ingest lead when they chew, suck, or swallow jewellery items containing lead which can cause damage to their bodies. Potential health effects associated with exposure to high levels of lead include vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, coma or even death.
Neither Health Canada nor Caramea has received any reports of incidents or illnesses related to the use of these products.
For more information on the risks and symptoms of lead exposure, visit Health Canada's: It's Your Health: Lead and Human Health and Health Canada Advises Consumers of Lead and Cadmium Hazard in Children's Jewellery.
