Product description

This recall involves PRO Atherton direct mount bicycle handlebar stems with the model number PRSS0049. The model number is found on the printed packaging material.

Stems with the following serial numbers and outfitted with 18 millimetre bolts are being recalled:

The stem consists of a metal alloy body, a front plate and four alloy bolts. The stem body is black with red markings with the word "PRO" in four places on the sides and a diagram of three people above the word "Atherton". The front plate is black and silver with the PRO logo in the center

Stems with the same serial numbers but outfitted with 21 millimetre bolts are not being recalled.

Hazard identified

The 18 millimetre bolts holding the front plate of the stem to the stem body can be pulled out of the threads while the bike is ridden, causing the rider to lose control of the bike and fall.

Shimano received one (1) reported incident in Canada where the rider received injuries to their torso, arm and wrist.

Health Canada has not received any reports of incidents or injuries related to the use of these products.

Number sold

Approximately 83 units of the recalled handlebar stems were sold in Canada.

Approximately 213 units of the recalled handlebar stems were sold in the United States.

Time period sold

The recalled handlebar stems were sold from October 2009 to November 2010 in Canada, and in the United States.

Place of origin

Manufactured in Taiwan.

What you should do

Consumers should immediately stop using bicycles with PRO Atherton Direct Mount Bicycle Handlebar Stems and take them to an authorized retailer to determine if the stem on their bike is subject to the recall. Authorized retailers will replace 18 millimetre bolts with 21 millimetre bolts free of charge.
