Product description

This recall involves various pieces of Shell Magic children's jewellery. The jewellery is a black cord necklace or bracelet with an embellished shell pendant or charm, and metallic clasp.

Hazard identified

The recalled pieces of jewellery contains metallic components with lead in excess of allowable limits. In addition, these pieces of jewellery contain cadmium in excess of guidance levels proposed recently by Health Canada.

Under the Children's Jewellery Regulations of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, it is illegal to import, advertise or sell jewellery items that appeal primarily to children under 15 years of age that contain more than 600 mg/kg total lead.

Lead and cadmium are known to be very toxic metals, especially for children. A range of serious health effects have been associated with exposure to lead and cadmium, including anemia, vomiting, diarrhea, serious brain injury, convulsions, coma, as well as effects related to the liver, kidneys, heart and immune system. In extreme cases, there have been deaths.

Neither Health Canada nor Grand Fortune Import has received any reports of incidents or illnesses related to the use of these products.

Number sold

Approximately 2,400 units of the recalled children's jewellery were sold at various stores across western Canada.

Time period sold

The recalled products were sold from 2005 to September 2012.

Place of origin

Manufactured in China.
