Product description

This recall involves Scout BCDs and Profile BCDs.

The Scout is a jacket-style BCD made of lightweight 240-denier nylon, and has two removable weight pockets and two back-mounted counter weight pockets. The BCD is black with blue accents on the lower sides. The word "Scout" is printed in white letters on the right front, and the name "Sea Elite" is located on a flap over the corrugated hose. Scout BCDs with serial numbers falling in the following ranges are affected: 001229-001244 and 001246-001489. The serial number is printed on a tag located in the front pocket.

The Profile is a jacket-type BCD made of heavyweight nylon, and has two removable weight pockets and two back-mounted counter weight pockets. The BCD is black with blue on lower sides. The word "Profile" is printed in white letters on the right front, and the name "Sea Elite" is located on a flap over the corrugated hose. Profile BCDs with serial numbers falling in the following ranges are affected: 000700-000729, 000733-000763, 000765-000772, 000879, 001490-001560 and 001562-001565. The serial number is printed on a tag located in the front pocket.

Hazard identified

The spring in the over pressure valve (OPV) can corrode and break, causing the buoyancy control device not to hold air, thus posing a drowning hazard to consumers.

There have been no reports of incidents or injuries in the United States or Canada.

Number sold

Approximately 48 of the recalled BCDs were sold online in Canada.

In the United States, approximately 405 recalled BCDs were sold at Divers Supply Store locations nationwide and online.

Time period sold

The recalled products were sold from May 2009 to October 2010.

Place of origin

Manufactured in China.

What you should do

Consumers should immediately stop using the Buoyancy Control Devices and return them to the Divers Supply Service Center indicated below for a free spring replacement. Alternatively, the consumer may request and install a new OPV spring that would be provided for their existing product.
