Product description
This recall involves all Safety 1st SmartLight Stair Gates. The product is a white metal gate with a gray handle and a motion sensor nightlight. The recalled gates have the model #42111. The model number is located on a sticker on the underside of the handle panel.
This recall includes all dates of manufacture.

Hazard identified
The hinges mounting the gate to the wall can break, posing a potential fall hazard to children when used at the top of the stairs.
Health Canada has received 1 new report of a hinge breaking, with no reported injuries.
Dorel Distribution Canada has received 30 new reports of hinge damage relating to gates that were not included in the original recall, with no resulting injuries.
Number sold
Approximately 7000 additional gates have been sold at Sears and Wal-Mart stores across Canada since the original recall was announced in February 2009.
Time period sold
The recalled products were all sold from February 2008 to July 2009.

What you should do
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled product and contact Dorel Juvenile Group to verify if their model is included in this recall. If their model is included in the recall, then the consumer should complete the online order form to obtain a free repair kit.
Please note that some gates have a new version of hinge that does not pose the hazard identified above, and that consumers with this new version of gate should still contact Dorel Juvenile Group but may not receive a repair kit.
Consumers should not return the product to retail stores.
