Affected products
The products, Home Bed Assist Handles, bearing model numbers 15064, 15062, RTL15073 and RTL15063-ADJ, are patient assist handles designed to provide support to independently-mobile consumers when getting into and out of bed. The products are metal handles of varying but similar designs which can be affixed alongside a mattress on home-style beds using retention mechanisms. The products are not designed for use with hospital beds.
Issue
The products may potentially pose a risk for entrapment. The products do not meet the performance requirements of the U.S. voluntary standard ASTM F3186-17 for adult portable bed rails.
The Company has received 1 report of a death in Canada and 1 reported death in the United States. In both instances, available information indicated that the product was not installed in accordance with the instructions, in that the retention straps were not properly secured.
Update: As of December 19, 2023, the company has received 1 additional report of a death in Canada. The Company is also aware of 3 fatalities in the United States, which took place before the recall was posted on December 6, 2021 but which were unknown to the company at the time of posting.
