Lawn mowers with Briggs & Stratton Engines

Product description

This recall involves Husqvarna®, Poulan Pro®, Jonsered®, Craftsman®, Yardworks®, Murray®, and Brute® brand lawn mowers with a Briggs & Stratton 7.25 HP engine. The lawn mowers were sold in red, orange, blue and yellow and black. Certain models have two larger rear wheels and two smaller front wheels while others have four identically sized wheels.

The mowers feature a long handle with an operator presence control bar that activates the engine when pushed down towards the mower handle.  Models may come with or without a collecting bag in the rear.  The mowers are labeled with the brand name, and will have the Briggs & Stratton logo on the engine shield.  The mower model and serial number can be found on the rear of the mowing deck, next to the rear wheel.

The following model and serial numbers are included in the recall:

Hazard identified

The operator presence control bar can malfunction causing the engine and blades to continue to operate even after the operator presence control bar is released, posing a laceration hazard.

Health Canada has received two reports of the engine continuing to run after the operator presence control bar is released.  No injuries have been reported.

In the United states, Husqvarna has received 53 warranty/service claims for the engine continuing to run after the operator presence control bar is released.  No injuries have been reported.

Number sold

Approximately 27,000 units of the recalled lawn mowers were sold at various hardware stores, home centers and equipment dealers in Canada, and approximately 208,000 were sold in the United States.
