Affected products

Sherpa 50 and Sherpa 120 Power Packs

Product description

This recall involves rechargeable battery packs that are used for recharging cell phones and laptops. They utilize lithium-ion-iron-phosphate technology, which allows users to charge the battery packs with an AC wall charger, a 12V car charger, or a solar panel.

The units were sold under the SherpaTM brand name. The Sherpa 50 products being recalled have serial numbers beginning with "S/N 11002". The Sherpa 120 products being recalled have serial numbers beginning with "S/N 11102". The serial numbers are located on the back of the battery packs.

Sherpa 50 battery packs with serial numbers starting with "S50" are not being recalled and are safe to use as intended.

Hazard identified

The battery cells in some Sherpa 50 and Sherpa 120 Power Packs may overcharge, causing them to overheat, bulge, and release gas. The heat generated could melt the Power Pack's enclosure and potentially discolour the surface upon which it is sitting and possibly cause a fire.

In the United States, Goal Zero has received one claim that a battery pack caught fire and one claim that a consumer became ill after breathing fumes emitted from the battery pack.

Neither Health Canada nor Goal Zero has received reports of consumer incidents or injuries to Canadians related to the use of the recalled products.
