Gerber® Gator® Machete and Gator® Machete Jr.
Product description
This recall involves the Gerber® Gator® Machete and Gator® Machete Jr. with the original handle. Both are sawback machetes with a fine edge on the bottom and a saw blade on the top. The blade of the machete is marked with the "Gerber" trademark.
The Gator® Machete is approximately 65 centimetres (25 ½ inches) long. The Gator® Machete Jr. is approximately 48 centimetres (18 ¾ inches) long.
The Gator® Machete and Gator® Machete Jr. with a modified handle (an extended hand guard) are not included in this recall.
Hazard identified
The saw side of the machete can stick in wood during use, and if the user's hand slips off the handle and slides forward across the machete blade, this poses a laceration hazard.
Gerber has received five reports of individuals cutting themselves while using the Gator Machete, all of whom required stitches. Gerber has received no reports of injuries associated with the use of the Gator Machete Jr.
Health Canada has not received reports of incidents or injuries related to the use of these products.
Number sold
Approximately 2,104 of the Gerber® Gator® Machetes with the original handle, and 384 of the Gator® Machete Jr. with the original handle, were sold in Canada.
Time period sold
The recalled products were sold from July 2007 to March 2010.
Place of origin

Consumers should stop using the recalled machetes immediately and contact Gerber Legendary Blades to receive instructions on how to return the machete for a free replacement machete.
Consumers should visually inspect the handle on their machete to determine if it is included in this recall.
