Gerber® Gator® Combo Axe

Product description

This voluntary corrective action involves the Gerber® Legendary Blades Gator® Combo Axe, which combines two products, an axe and a knife. The axe is 22 centimetres (8.75 inches) long and has a hollow space in its handle, and the 18 centimetres (7 inches) knife can be inserted into and taken out of that space. The "Gerber®" trademark is on the side of the axe handle and on the knife blade.

The affected products can be identified by the model number 22-49470.

Note that the Gerber® Combo Axe II, Model Number 22-41420, which combines a longer axe with a saw in its handle, is not involved in this corrective action.

Hazard identified

Hammering or chopping with the axe without first removing the knife from the axe handle can create a force upon impact which may cause the knife to come out of the handle and stick upright, and on the next down stroke the knife can pose a laceration hazard to the user.

Neither Gerber nor Health Canada has received reports of injuries related to the use of the Combo Axe in Canada.

Approximately 13,130 of these Combo Axes were sold through retailers in Canada, with the majority having been sold through Canadian Tire stores.

What you should do

Consumers should immediately stop using the Combo Axe and contact Gerber to receive their free Handle Cap, instructions for installing the Handle Cap, and a warning sticker. Once installed on the axe, the Handle Cap will keep the knife securely in the axe handle during transport and storage.

Combo Axes sold by Gerber since March 2011 have the Handle Cap already installed. If you purchased a Combo Axe with a Handle Cap, there is no need for you to contact Gerber, but you should still always remove the knife from the axe handle before using the axe.

For more information, consumers should call Gerber toll-free at 1-877-314-9130 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific time, Monday through Friday, or visit the firm's website.
