Product description
This recall involves the Vulli brand Chan Pie Gnon "Cool-it Soother" liquid-filled teether, distributed exclusively in Canada by Bug in a Rug.
The teether has a green handle with a head shaped like a mushroom. Attached to the "mushroom head" is a liquid-filled ring.
The teether is marketed as being BPA and phthalate free and intended for ages 3 months and up. It can be identified by UPC 3056560102026.
Hazard identified
Under the Hazardous Products Act, infant teether fillings must not contain any living micro-organisms.
Testing by Health Canada of samples of the Chan Pie Gnon "Cool-it Soother" has revealed that the liquid filling was contaminated with the bacteria Burkholderia cepacia as well as mould. These bacteria generally do not cause illness in healthy individuals. However the bacteria can affect children with weakened immune systems, causing stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea if the teether is punctured and the liquid from the teether is ingested or enters open wounds.
Neither Health Canada nor Bug in a Rug has received reports of incidents or illnesses related to the use of the teethers.

Approximately 496 of the recalled teethers were sold at various specialty baby shops across Canada.
