Product description
This recall involves Black & Decker random orbit sanders with model numbers RO400, RO400G, RO400G-CA, RO410, RO410K, RO410K-CA, RO410LW, FD3000ROS, and FS3000ROS-CA, and date codes between 200701 and 200929. The model number is printed on a label on the sander while the date code is stamped on the underside of the sander (where the dust bag is inserted).
The sanders are orange and black, and have "Black & Decker" printed on them.
Hazard identified
The black plastic disc (called the platen) that holds the sandpaper can fly off or break apart during use and hit users; this poses a laceration hazard.
Black & Decker has received 73 reports of incidents involving the platen breaking or falling apart. This includes 15 reports of injuries from flying pieces, one of which involved a serious facial laceration.
Health Canada has not received any reports of incidents or injuries related to the use of these sanders.
Number sold
Approximately 20,200 of the recalled products were sold at Canadian Tire, Lowe's, Wal-Mart, authorized Black & Decker dealers, and other home centers, hardware, and discount stores.
Time period sold
The recalled products were sold from January 2007 to July 2009.
Place of origin
Manufactured in China.
