Product description
This recall involves various pieces of "Bella Bling Charms" children's jewellery. The jewellery line consists of necklaces, bracelets and interchangeable charms with a metallic clasp.
Hazard identified
Health Canada's sampling and evaluation program has determined that the recalled pieces of jewellery contain metallic components with lead in excess of allowable limits. In addition, these pieces of jewellery contain cadmium in excess of guidance levels proposed recently by Health Canada.
Under the Children's Jewellery Regulations of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, it is illegal to import, advertise or sell jewellery items that appeal primarily to children under 15 years of age that contain more than 600 mg/kg total lead.
Lead is very toxic to children, even at low exposure levels. Children can ingest lead when they chew, suck, or swallow jewellery items containing lead which can cause damage to their bodies. Potential health effects associated with exposure to high levels of lead include vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, coma or even death.
Neither Health Canada nor S-Team has received any reports of incidents or illnesses related to the use of these products.
For more information on the risks and symptoms of lead exposure and cadmium exposure, visit Health Canada's It's Your Health: Effects of Lead on Human Health and Health Canada Advises Consumers of Lead and Cadmium Hazard in Children's Jewellery.
