Product description

50-piece wooden alphabet and number block set painted a variety of colours; manufacturer's age recommendation 18+ months; item no. 8409; UPC # 834162008198.

Hazard identified

Testing by Health Canada revealed that the surface paint on the wooden toy blocks contains barium in excess of the allowable limit.

Some forms of barium are safely used in medical and commercial applications, while other forms of barium can be toxic, causing adverse health effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and cramps as well as more severe symptoms. Children's toys coated with paint containing barium, in excess of the allowable limit, are strictly prohibited in Canada.

Health Canada has not received reports of illness or injury to Canadians related to the use of this toy.

Number sold

Approximately 455 of the toys were sold in Canada.

Time period sold

The toys were sold from September 2006 until August 2008 at various toy, educational and variety stores in the following provinces: New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta.

Place of origin

Manufactured in China.
