About 1 Million Simplicity Cribs Recalled Due To Failures Resulting in Infant Deaths
Hazard identified
The drop side of the crib can disengage causing a gap to form.
In the US there have been 3 reported deaths, 7 reported incidents of entrapment, and 55 other reported incidents associated with various Simplicity cribs. In Canada, there have been no reported deaths or injuries.
The drop-side failures result from both the hardware and crib design, which allow consumers to unintentionally install the drop-side upside down. This, in turn, can weaken the hardware and cause the drop-side to detach from the crib. When the drop-side detaches, it creates a gap in which infants can become entrapped.
Number sold
The total number of cribs sold in Canada was about 263.
These numbers have been reduced from those previously reported. The number of units affected in Canada differs from the number of units affected in the United States, as units destined for the Canadian market undergo a different inspection procedure.
Time period sold
These cribs were sold in mass merchandisers, specialty retailers and department stores from January 2001 through June 2007.

What you should do
It is extremely important that consumers take immediate action to determine if the crib they are using is affected by this recall. This type of hazard presents an extremely serious risk.
Consumers should check to see if the drop‑side is installed right side up. To do this, check to see that the slightly rounded rail with the decorative groove is installed at the top and the plain rail is on the bottom. Next, consumers should make sure the drop‑side is securely attached to the tracks in all four corners. If the drop‑side is installed upside down or not securely attached, consumers should stop using the crib immediately. Incorrect installation can cause permanent damage to the hardware and re‑installing the drop‑side using the same hardware is unsafe. Consumers should check to see if their crib contains the hardware indicated in this advisory. The affected hardware has a flexible tab at the bottom of the lower tracks and the top of the lower tracks are open. Newer hardware, which is not subject to this advisory, has the flexible tab located at the top of the lower track, and a permanent stop at the bottom.
Elfe Juvenile Products will provide replacement hardware as required.
Elfe Juvenile Products will mail, to all known owners with a Simplicity crib affected by this advisory, instructions to correct the installation of the drop side rail. In addition, Elfe Juvenile Products will email these instructions to those consumers who provided their email address to Elfe Juvenile Products. In Canada, to ascertain whether your crib is affected, please call the Consumer Service department of Elfe Juvenile Products at 1‑800‑667‑8184.
