Serious Injuries Prompt Recall of Mattel's Polly Pocket Magnetic Play Sets.
Hazard identified
Tiny magnets inside the toys can fall out. Although this toy is intended for children 4 years of age and older, magnets found by younger children can be swallowed or aspirated. If more than one magnet is swallowed, the magnets can attract to each other and cause intestinal perforation or blockage, which can be fatal. This product is unsuitable for young children. In the U.S., there have been 170 reports of small magnets from Polly Pocket! detaching from the toys and three reports of serious injuries to children after swallowing more than one magnet. The children, aged 2, 7 and 8 years suffered intestinal perforation and required surgery.
A description of the problem can be found in the Health Canada small magnet advisory of November 2006:
Health Canada advises parents and caregivers about the hazards of ingesting small magnets.
Number sold
