Product description

This recall involves decorative glazed plates with a Canada theme by Glazers Inc. The recalled glazed plates are white with one of the following 3 designs on it:

  • Canadian flag
  • Red maple leaf with the word "CANADA" printed across it; or
  • 2 Canadian flags with the word "CANADA" printed underneath.

The plate is approximately 20.3 cm (8 inches) in diameter. The recalled plates have a removable sticker on the back, with UPC 060096481701.

Hazard identified

Health Canada's sampling and evaluation program has revealed that the recalled plates contain lead and cadmium in excess of the allowable limits.

If the warning label on the bottom of the plate is removed and these plates are used as dinner plates, and not as decorative plates, then consumers would be exposed to lead and cadmium.

Warning labels on decorative ceramics and glassware must be permanent and describe the hazard.

Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects. Cadmium is highly toxic, builds up in the body, and can cause stomach pains, vomiting and diarrhea. Over time, exposure to cadmium can result in kidney damage.

For more information on the risks and symptoms of lead exposure, visit the Healthy Canadians page called Reduce your exposure to lead.

For more information on heavy metals in glazes, visit Health Canada's Glazed Ceramics and Glassware – Dealer Information.
